GCGSI September Meeting: The Gates Family in Gilmer County

The Gilmer County Genealogical Society will hold its September monthly meeting on Saturday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level meeting room of the Gilmer County Library. The program will be a presentation about “The Gates Family in Gilmer County,” with speaker Anita Davis Summers.
This presentation, which was requested by many earlier this year, will focus on the descendants of Peter Austin Gates, with special emphasis on the descendants of his son Samuel Wesley Gates who lived in the Mountaintown/Gates Chapel area of Gilmer County.
Ms. Summers, our speaker, is a native of Gilmer County and descendant of early settler Peter Austin Gates. She also descended from some of the first settlers in the county, including Milton Davis, Absalom Pence, William Sumner, and Daniel Smith. She is a retired director of the Sequoyah Regional Library System and former manager of the Gilmer County Library.
The meeting which takes place in the lower level meeting room of the Gilmer County Library begins at 2:00 p.m., but come a little early early for refreshments and conversation. With the reemergence of Covid in Gilmer County, masks are recommended but not required.
